Reins, Bridles, Harnesses, and Saddlecloths. . .

Lots of white trim left now on these 14 Minden Bosniaks plus some other tiny details like the stirrups and other assorted metal sparkly bits.  Horse and musket era cavalry, you know.

I've spent the last several days since Christmas working in short painting sessions as and when time and family permitted, but we're getting there.  Mostly dark brown on the reins, bridles, and harness followed by a lighter red-brown highlights and then dark red for the saddlecloth edges followed, this afternoon, with scarlet highlights.

Tomorrow, New Year's Eve 2019, The Grand Duchess and Young Master have something planned out on the town during the middle part of the day at a local science musem that is a favorite of Paul's.  So, I'll have my solo refight of Hook's Farm then and, hopefully, I can get in another painting session tomorrow evening.

And what of our New Year's Eve plans?  Easy, gents and ladies.  The Grand Duchess and I, as usual the last ten years or so, will be staying in and enjoying a glass or two of wine at midnight along with some binging on Netflix, or perhaps some Scrabble or Yahtzee at which she is a dab hand.  I know.  I know.  Life out there on the bloody edge, but this is what children and middle age reduce one to.

Truth be told, I'd rather spend an evening by the fire with The Grand Duchess than in a room full of slightly tipsy people doing and saying dumb things.  Drinks by the fireside with one's special someone, some decent conversation, and a few rounds of a game or an interesting TV series or movie seem infinitely preferable.  Wouldn't you agree?

A New Year's Eve Painting P.S.

By my reckoning, I still have the following things to do: stirrups and other metallic bits on bridles/harnesses; scabbards/sword hilts/sword knots; white belts; white trim (silver for the officer); black lance stripes; touch-ups.  So, still much to do, but hopefully I can wrap these up and get 'em glossed early in January and move on to the next part of the winter painting project. . .  A small semi-fictitious Freicorps.

Not just middle age and kids. I have never been a fan of a large parties, especially the kind where people stand around and just talk and drink. My wild NYE may not even last as late as 11PM. At home, reading, painting minis, playing a board game or computer game, or maybe watching a movie or 2, with tea or hot chocolate and maybe a light snack.

Here's hoping for a great year in 2020 for you and yours and all of the readers and bloggers in this hobby realm!
I agree, Fitz. Smaller, more intimate gatherings are fun, say 10 or less for dinner and drinks (in moderation), but loud parties with huge numbers of guests oddly never appealed to me, even as a relative youngster in my late teens and 20s. Hardly the atmosphere for lively, interesting conversation.

Happy New Year to You,

I have never been a new year party person. Your evening sounds lovely. I don’t even stay up for the Bells. My maternal granny was one for all sorts of traditions such as throwing open the windows to let the new year in and first footing. Much of that has gone now. Yataze holds a special place for me as the night before I got married I couldn’t sleep and I played the dice game solo in the wee small hours of the morning to pass the time. I really must introduce my daughters to it. We have enjoyed Scrabble this Christmas and will play again over new year. Enjoy the solo game and I look forward to seeing the battle report. Happy New Year to you and yours when it comes.

Happy New Year Stokes. Those Bosniaken are coming alone nicely.

Mrs Fritz, Princess Lelia and I are staying in on NYE. I've been catching up on old Clint Eastwood cowboy flics recently.

Jim
I have a long, happy, history of quiet New Year's at home from teen years listening to the top 100 countdown on CHOM FM till today. Not that I haven't experienced New Years at pubs, at parties, as duty Watch Officer..... quiet at home suits me best.

May you and your family thrive and enjoy life in 2020.
Each to their own Stokes, Me I will be drinking too much and talking more crap than usual but I enjoy that sort of behavior. Its in the blood. Still enjoy the night and think of completing the Bosniak unit.

Here's an RSM Painting Update

Here's a picture illustrating my (S-L-O-W) progress with the second company of Stollen's Leib (Grand Duchess Sonja's Own) Grenadiers. You can see I'm doing things a bit differently this time, altering the painting process to keep it interesting basically. This evening, I'll do the white gaiters and, if that goes reasonably quickly, and time allows, the red breeches. Still lots to do, but I like the way these fine fellows are shaping up along side the completed 1st company that's standing in formation just off camera, to the left here. Until tonight then!

Presenting the Anspach-Bayreuth Kuirassiere!!!

Here they are, with the rearmost nine figures still drying, three squadrons of the Anspach-Bayreuth Kuirassiere, now in the service of the Grand Duchy of Stollen. And now, it's onto that artillery!

Having a "No Day". . .

F or the almost 20 years that she lived in Mexico, one of my late mother's Irish friends frequently mentioned having a "No Day."  A day with no social obligations, chores, tasks, or other work that interfered with whatever personal interests took one's fancy on the day in question. Since today -- a gray and chilly Saturday -- is Mom's birthday, the Grand Duchess is out with friends, and the Young Master is ensconced on the sofa in the TV room with a cold, yours truly is taking his own such No Day.  I think Mom would approve of my decision to make the world go away, as the old Eddie Arnold song intoned, even if only for a little while. So, I will spend Saturday afternoon focused on that first squadron and small regimental staff of Eureka Saxon cuirassiers.  These have stood waiting  untouched over on the painting table for almost three weeks while we skied and otherwise gadded about with snowy, winter outdoor activities. I hope to share a painting update Sunday...
