Here's an RSM Painting Update

Here's a picture illustrating my (S-L-O-W) progress with the second company of Stollen's Leib (Grand Duchess Sonja's Own) Grenadiers. You can see I'm doing things a bit differently this time, altering the painting process to keep it interesting basically. This evening, I'll do the white gaiters and, if that goes reasonably quickly, and time allows, the red breeches. Still lots to do, but I like the way these fine fellows are shaping up along side the completed 1st company that's standing in formation just off camera, to the left here. Until tonight then!

I really like the way you paint. Very nice. Does "Lieb" mean Life? Do you use it in a "Life Guards" sense for the Grand Duchess? A military unit but ceremonially the bodyguards of the duchess?

Hi Auston,

Thanks for your kind words. I appreciate them very much. I guess the painting style comes from years of practice. The German word "Leib" in this case does mean something like household or life guards. "Lieb" means love. The two words are often confused. If I typed Lieb in the blog entry, I meant Leib ;-)

Best Regards,

Leib is often, though I think not always, used to indicate a unit in which the owner/Inhaber of the regiment was at least nominally the sovereign or a family member. That's been my understanding at least. Typically these units are guards units.
