One of Those Wargaming Dreams Again. . .

But not of the toy soldiers arrayed across a Gilderesque table variety.  No.  Instead, I was in a hobby shop somewhere rooting through stacks of old, hobby-related magazines  -- for just 10 cents US each -- and managed to find copies of Wargamer's Newsletter and Battle along with early issues of Miniature Wargames, Practical Wargamer, and Military Modelling in reasonable condition.  Dog-earred and faded, sure, but still good enough to read and enjoy.

I managed to gather a selection of about 24 or 30 before others in the throng had picked through everything.  Then, I had a quick conversation with the guy at the cash register about having lived in Madison and Minneapolis before leaving with my new stash.  The dream was so real that it woke me.  At 5am on a Saturday.

The subconscious is cruel sometimes.

Sadly Ive had similar dreams Stokes. Mine concern finding some of Peter Gilder's painted figures in a charity shop and buying them for just a few pence. Life can be cruel.
Indeed, gentlemen! Indeed. Life -- and dreams -- can be cruel. Thank you for your comments. Steve, if you could, please direct me to where I might find links to the old newsletters. I'd love to read through them.

Kind Regards,

Stokes
Hi Stokes - the link in my comment will take you to the repository of all things glorious.. well Wargamers Newsletters by the armful, anyway - all collected together and hosted by the excellent Jon Haines.. I scanned a number of them myself from my own collection, but I know Jon is missing a few so if anyone has copies of the missing ones I know he'd like to hear from them.. regards, Steve.. Thank you Steve! Greatly appreciated. Can't wait "to get stuck in" as you say on the other side of the pond.

Kind Regards,

I often have a dream where I find an old fashioned games shop. Can just browse the ranges and select what I fancy.

Harsh! I had a dream about wargaming recently. I was umpiring a large Indian Mutiny game and it was going really well. There was drama, there was chaos, gates were being blown up, Mutineers were rampaging through the streets and had seized an elephant artillery battery.

And then I realised that one of the fellas I was playing with was a friend of mine who had died last year. And then I woke up. It was a strange feeling. But good to see him again.

A good dream while it lasted, though, Stokes. But the waking from these dreams is certainly very frustrating. Oddly, I don't think I've ever had a wargaming dream. I certainly van't remember any. Most of the dreams I have I really enjoy waking from! Even Real Life actually seems better... I must have been very wicked in a former life. ;-)

The Eventual Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment. . .

The Anhalt-Zerbst regiment musters in the drill square to sort themselves into platoons and companies during the coming weeks  Fall maneuvers if you will. A large dose of real life the last few days with the start of classes next Monday, various preparatory meetings, and finishing up a few other things this week.  But, I managed to sort out 60 or so Minden Austrian infantry from the pile and get 'em stuck to temporary painting bases.  Must carefully drill out the hands of several NCOs for flagpoles and pole arms this weekend before the usual basecoat.   I'm thinking of mixing the usual white gesso with the usual light gray to kill two birds with one stone so to speak.  Applying both base- and undercoat in one fell swoop as my grandmother used to say. In the meantime, the recently finished squadron of Saxon cuirassiers has been placed carefully in one of the clear acrylic boxes on my shelves until I have the suitable flag to affix.   -- Sto...

Presenting the Anspach-Bayreuth Kuirassiere!!!

Here they are, with the rearmost nine figures still drying, three squadrons of the Anspach-Bayreuth Kuirassiere, now in the service of the Grand Duchy of Stollen. And now, it's onto that artillery!

And It's the End of September!!!

Saxony's Ploetz Cuirassiers, an illustration lifted from the Kronoskaf website, which has thus far guided my spectacularly glacial painting of 30 28mm Eureka Saxon cuirassiers purchased all the way back in October 2016. A gray, cool Saturday here in Mid-Michigan with rain in the forecast. The Grand Duchess is away at a conference, so it's just "The Boys" here at home. The Young Master (almost 15) has retreated to his room for something or other following breakfast while I have stolen back down here to Zum Stollenkeller (masquerading as my office) with a second mug of coffee and both cats comfortably ensconced nearby. Enjoying the late morning and still in my pajamas! Not much planned for today beyond designing a couple of promotional flyers for workshops my department is presenting (small parties we will throw?) in October and November.  With maybe a bit of on the next podcast script. More important,  I am toying with the idea of returning for an hour or...
