Gameday is just one week away!

Gosh, only a week to go until that start of the play-by-e-mail game between Jonathan Broadus and me! And still so much to do in preparation.

Five of the hills are now complete, painted on both sides to prevent any warping of the styrofoam sheeting. The four remaining large hills/ridges still need two coats of paint on their edges and bottom sides, but I'm waiting for the second coat on the topside to dry overnight before taking care of that.

Work on the second squadron of hussars continues, and they might actually be finished in time for two squadrons to take the field, if Jonathan so chooses. I finally got around to adding an appropraiately sized sewing needle to the right hand of the standard bearer, and it will work nicely as a pole (just right) onto which I'll glue a hussar guidon. The eye of the needle even looks like a finial at arm's length! Expect a photo here in a day or two when I get it all finished.

So, next week, I must write a short narrative to personalize Charles Grant's scenario a bit relative to the Stollen-Zichenau campaign and add a few items to the Charge! quick play reference sheet that I found on the Yahoo Old School Wargaming group some time ago, so that we minimize referral to the book in the midst of play. Of course, I'll need to forward that to Jonathan before Saturday too.

And then, there is setting up the table and scenery on Friday afternoon. before deciding on the precise composition of my force (Stollenian) and figuring out it's starting deployment.
Ah, and I must make sure to have fresh batteries in the digital camera, so that can seend Jonathan frequent photo updates. . . and post them here too. I feel like the white rabbit at the opening of Alice in Wonderland, checking his pocket watch and running toward the hole in the groound.

Oh yes, and the latest issue of Battlegames arrived in the mail early this afternoon. Haven't really looked at it yet, but a cursory glance at the table of contents suggests that it's another exciting and packed issue. I'm sure I've said this before, but the magazine seems to get better and better with each new issue. So, while the Grand Duchess drifts off into slumberland late tonight, I'll be reading away over on my side of the bed with the cat comfortably perched on my stomach just behind issue #15 og BG.

But first, the Grand Duchess and I are heading out for a treat this evening. "Bjorn Again", the Australian-based ABBA tribute band is in town, and guess who has tickets? Yes, yes. . . We are shame-faced fans of ABBA, and now I've outted us!
But it should be fun. . . "So, ring, ring, why don't you give me a call?" ;-)

Just remember, butter and the best jam will help the watch run better. But don't less be silly...no mustard.

I'll be sitting on some comfortable hillside under a tree watching the battle unfold! :-)

(was wondering what the pic of ABBA had to do with the upcoming battle! lol)

I'm sure the new hussar squadron will prove to be Super Troupers, and anyone would need the eyes of an Eagle to spot the needle guidon staff. In the upcoming fight, Take a Chance, and let the cavalry ride On and On and On to give their enemies their own version of Waterloo. That's the Name of the Game. ;)

Thanks for the comments, men. My favorite ABBA numbers would be either S.O.S., Dancing Queen, of Honey, Honey -- each of which I remember hearing on the radio as a boy, when I used to sneak a small transistor radio into bed and listen in the dark after my mother had tucked me in for the night. ;-)

I remember "I can hear the drums, Fernando" ... but what was the title ...
and I wondered why the band looked so 60ish ... okay, I lived in the 60's, but I can only remember a few bits and pieces ....
:)
PS:
Where and how can we monitor your battle???

Any chance of a copy of your quick reference sheet for Charge - I would find it very useful?
Alan
Alan,

You bet! Just remind me again in a few days after I've had a chance to make a few minor additions.

It's Early Days Yet. . .

M aking some early progress with Batch A of the Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment over the last several days/evenings.  Nothing terribly exciting just yet, but the basic black, brown, and flesh areas are done as are the green bases, and gray undercoat.   The latter two areas needed some careful retouching early in the week.  Next up, the neck stocks.   I might just do these in red for the enlisted men although some of my source material suggest they were black, but I always look for an excuse to shake things up a bit.  Any errant splotches of red (or black) can be covered with another application of light gray before I move onto the next step.   "Giddy up!" as one Cosmo Kramer might have said. -- Stokes

A Little More Brushwork. . .

A little more brushwork on the first batch of (my version of) the Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment yesterday (Saturday).  Taking a different tack this time and addressing many of the details first before the white coats and other larger areas of uniform.   The eagle-eyed among you will notice that I've painted the (dark) red stocks of the enlisted men.  Always a difficult and frustrating item to paint, it made sense to paint from the inside out as it were and get that particular detail out of the way first rather than try to paint it in later after much other painting has been accomplished.  Trying to reduce the need for later retouching of other items on the figures you understand. Hopefully, I will be able to get back to these later today after a second trip back to the Apple Store for help with a couple of new iPad issues and, following the return home, some revision of Google Slides for tomorrow's meetings with my students. -- Stokes P.S. And We're Off!!!

Arrrgh!  Gotta go back into camera settings on my iPhone to bring all of the frame into focus.  Blast! Painting is underway on the 60 or so Minden Austrians, which are slated to become my version of the Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment of AWI renown.  More or less indistinguishable from Austrians of the era really, right down to the red facings and turnbacks, but the eventual flags (already in my files) will set them apart.   I went ahead and based-coated all of them over a couple of days lthe last week of August, using a mix of light gray and white acrylic gesso, before next applying my usual basic alkyd oil flesh tone to the faces and hands.  In a day or two, I'll hit that with Army Painter Flesh Wash to tone things down a bit and bring some definition to the faces and hands.   As usual, the plan is to focus on about 20 figures at a time, splitting the regiment roughly into thirds along with the color party and regimental staff.  Depending on ...
