T-Minus Four Days and Counting to the BIG MOVE

Greeting loyal Grand Duchy of Stollen subjects (ok, “visitors”) everywhere! It has been far too long. The Grand Duke Irwin-Amadeus II wishes that I convey his sincerest apologies for failing to keep everyone updated and informed through this period of upheaval and transition. The Grand Duchess and I shall find ourselves ensconced in our new abode by Thursday evening this week.

That means four more fevered days of packing before the movers arrive! The Grand Duchess has overseen dismantling of the grand ducal kitchens while Oberfeldwebel Klatschen will march the forces of Stollen and Zichenau, together with a motley assortment of 15mm Napoleonics, over to their new quarters later this afternoon or tomorrow. The guitars and personal effects will follow along with various and sundry other loose ends early in the week.

The grand plan is to have only the heavy book boxes and furniture remaining by Thursday morning when the movers arrive. So far, so good. But jeeze Louise is there a lot of stuff to take over between now and then! Stay tuned for a future update, although it may take a few days to get our web connections up and running since the Grand Duchess and I will have our respective offices located on separate floors of the new house.

Good luck! Been there and done that a number of times and it is truly exhausting. With 8,000 books plus we sympathise too - you'll have arms like a gorilla by the time you've shunted them around the place! ;-)

Look forward to a progress report when things calm down a little.

All the best,

David.

Stokes,

'Tis good to hear from you again (and thanks for the email).

I was thinking just the other day that I'd turn down an offer of a million dollars for our house.

It isn't worth anything like that of course . . . but it suits us and the hassle of moving would be more than we'd want to deal with at our ages.

I sincerely hope that your move goes super easily.

I'm looking forward to seeing photos from Der Stollenkeller . . . but I realize that once you are "in" the new house that it still takes quite a while to get fully settled in . . . it takes much longer than you think it will . . . but once in you will be very happy.

Give our best to the lovely Grand Duchess.

Moving books is a real b***h isn't it? Part of the hazzards of being a wargamer historian. I didn't see the Grand Duke's lobster costume in the picture.

" I didn't see the Grand Duke's lobster costume in the picture."

Isn't that red item near the top of the load the lobster costume?

And after having moved many times will in the Army, including twice to and from Germany, you have my best wishes for a successful and trouble-free move.

Hi Stokes,

I thought the picture was of you going to Cold Wars! Isn't it amazing how much stuff gets accumulated as the years roll on? Please pace yourself and don't overdo the heavy lifting/lugging. Oh! and don't forget about the quarter round fieldworks on all those trips to Home Depot!

Yours,

Martin

Progress is being made, as my old driving instructor used to say. I hope everything goes smoothly.

And We're Off!!!

Arrrgh!  Gotta go back into camera settings on my iPhone to bring all of the frame into focus.  Blast! Painting is underway on the 60 or so Minden Austrians, which are slated to become my version of the Anhalt-Zerbst Regiment of AWI renown.  More or less indistinguishable from Austrians of the era really, right down to the red facings and turnbacks, but the eventual flags (already in my files) will set them apart.   I went ahead and based-coated all of them over a couple of days lthe last week of August, using a mix of light gray and white acrylic gesso, before next applying my usual basic alkyd oil flesh tone to the faces and hands.  In a day or two, I'll hit that with Army Painter Flesh Wash to tone things down a bit and bring some definition to the faces and hands.   As usual, the plan is to focus on about 20 figures at a time, splitting the regiment roughly into thirds along with the color party and regimental staff.  Depending on ...

Sunday Morning Coffee with AI. . .

A rmed with a second cup of fresh, strong coffee, I messed around a bit this morning with artlist.io using its image to image function in an attempt to convert my hand-drawn map from September 2006 to something that more resembles an old map from the mid-18th century.  And just like my experiments with Ninja AI in June, the results are mixed.   The above map is pretty good, but Artlist keeps fouling up the place names and has trouble putting a faint overlay of hexes across the entire area.  Hexes, admittedly, are not likely to be found on any genuine maps from the era in question, but there we are.  Frankly, I prefer the appearance of the Ninja map, but there were problems getting it to correct its errors.  Grrrr.  As is the case with so much having to do with the various AI's out there now, the output generated is a direct result of the prompts entered.  For text alone, and when you develop a lengthy, highly detailed prompt, it is...

Continued Regional Map Revisions. . .

F ooled around a bit more with the revised map just before and after dinner this evening, using the Fotor app to reinsert missing text .  I also removed a few other things using the 'Magic Eraser' function, which works surprisingly well.  Now, we're getting somewhere.  I just have to figure out how to ensure that the text is all a uniform font style and maybe figure out a way to add a few bunches of trees to suggest forested areas,  Ninja AI is not always entirely cooperative to the tune of "I'm sorry Dave.  I can't do that." -- Stokes
