Armies Converge on Pelznikkel. . .

A general panorama of the battlefield and town around which the armies have arrayed themselves.

After almost two years of painting, here are a few photos of the set-up!!! Before you are the armies of Stollen and Zichenau arrayed around the small town of Pelznikkel, located on the postal road between the frontier and the Stollenian capital of Krankenstadt.

A few final touch-ups on the Wolmar-Bock Regiment from Pillau-Zerbst, which will join the Zichenauer army, and we’re all set to begin the battle later this afternoon. The rules will be the basic rules outlined in Charge! I’ll also be using my Featherstone/Grant/Asquith inspired tactical chance cards, which have not been laminated yet, but I can’t wait. I’m eager to see what directions those take the game in!


Above, the Army of Zichenau awaits the arrival of an independent company of the Wolmar-Bock Regiment? Now, where have they got to?


How will the battle go? Will the Grand Duchy of Stollen manage to repel the Zichenauer menace against the odds? Or will the Electorate of Zichenau march into Krankenstadt and reclaim the contested Duchy of Schleiz? Watch for further developments right here to find out!

Meanwhile, the stalwart Stollenians await their fate on the western side of Pelznikkel. In the middle distance, you'll observe the Leib (Grand Duchess of Sonja's Own) Grenadiers still in their company columns, sorting themselves out before forming into line behind the Von Laurenz Musketeers.

Victory will go to the side that holds the town at the end of ten turns. Arbitrary, yes, but it seems like a good compromise when one is moving all of those soldiers himself. Look for updates as I complete the various turns of the game. Charge!

That's a fine Old School set-up, Stokes. Very inspiring. Why, you could almost convert me to the concept of imagi-nations... Well, almost!

You should be justly proud. I just wish that I wasn't off to a rehearsal scheduled from 3-10 . . . I won't get to see the occasional updates.

Taking Stock Part II: The (As Yet) Unpainted but Planned OOB. . .

  Two companies of Reichsarmee grenadiers painted back in 2017 or 2018.  Minden Austrians of course. A lovely early autumn day here in the grand duchy.  Bright sunshine and a light breeze with cool temperatures will make for some very pleasant late afternoon lawn mowing in a little while.  But first a bit more discussion of painting plans for the future. Last time, I looked back at the various and sundry units, support troops, and civilians that I've managed to paint in the last 17 years as the Grand Duchy of Stollen project has developed.  So today, let's look into the seemingly bottomless Drawer 'o' Lead to my left for a clue to the new direction.  Be forewarned, it's not going to be a quick job getting everything painted and based, but there we are. Having a "No Day". . .

  F or the almost 20 years that she lived in Mexico, one of my late mother's Irish friends frequently mentioned having a "No Day."  A day with no social obligations, chores, tasks, or other work that interfered with whatever personal interests took one's fancy on the day in question. Since today -- a gray and chilly Saturday -- is Mom's birthday, the Grand Duchess is out with friends, and the Young Master is ensconced on the sofa in the TV room with a cold, yours truly is taking his own such No Day.  I think Mom would approve of my decision to make the world go away, as the old Eddie Arnold song intoned, even if only for a little while. So, I will spend Saturday afternoon focused on that first squadron and small regimental staff of Eureka Saxon cuirassiers.  These have stood waiting  untouched over on the painting table for almost three weeks while we skied and otherwise gadded about with snowy, winter outdoor activities.
